Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the 'Panama Papers' leak during the 3rd Media Forum of Independent Regional and Local Media in St. Petersburg, Thursday.
"Regarding these offshore companies, your faithful servant [Putin] is not there. There is nothing to speak about. But there is a task, work should be done. They have made an informational product," he stated of the journalists who broke the story, adding that "they conducted research and created something. I looked through these images. There are a lot of strange people in the background and the photo of your faithful servant [Putin] is in front in large format. And that is exactly what is being promoted." Moreover, Putin said there was no "corruption component" in the documents that would link any of his friends or acquaintances.
The Russian leader also said there are many creative types in Russia who run businesses, including famous Russian cellist Sergei Roldugin, who is allegedly mentioned in the leaks and is also Putin's friend. "He is a minority shareholder in one of our companies where he does earn some money but of course it is not billions of dollars," the Russian leader explained. "I'm proud of such people as Sergei Pavlovich [Roldugin] both among my friends and in general. Almost all the money that he earned there he spent on the purchase of musical instruments abroad and brought them to Russia," Putin added.
The data provided in the leak centres around the activities of Mossack Fonseca over a period from the 1970s until spring 2016. There is believed to be an estimated 11.5 million documents in the Panama Papers, making it the largest leak of its kind. The information provided in the leak purportedly exposes the offshore holdings of 12 current and former world leaders as well as unveiling data on the financial activities of 128 other politicians and public officials from a number of countries.
