Tbilisi Zoo reopened in Georgia on Sunday after flooding in June devastated the facility and led to the escape of numerous animals. According to the Zoo, there are 300 animals left alive including white lions, a rhino and leopards while 280 lost their lives in the floods in which the lower part of the zoo was destroyed. A hippo, Beggi, initially made a successful escape since hippopotamuses are comfortable in water. Shots of the hippo in the streets of Tbilisi were published all over the world, acquiring him the nickname 'Legend.' He is back in the zoo and is reported to be in a good mood and fully recovered, from the ordeal. Zoos across the world offered their help following the floods, with some offering to loan their animals. Tbilisi Zoo accepted animals which they consider easy to keep. The Vere River broke its banks after a rainstorm on June 14, leading to the deaths of 19 people in the subsequent flood.
