Artist Ai Weiwei’s newest installation at Berlin’s popular Gendarmenmarkt was available to see, Friday. However, the work is not finished and its will take until Sunday for the exhibit to be completed. The project, made up of life jackets that were collected on the Greek island of Lesbos, a key entry point into the European Union for refugees, has been set up to remember those who drowned making their trip.
The artwork will be presented to the public on Monday during the Cinema for Peace gala.
According to UNHCR figures, over one million migrants landed on European shores from the Mediterranean Sea in 2015, with southern Europe seeing the majority of arrivals. It is estimated that over 44,000 have taken the route that sees them land on Lesbos since 2016 began, with Syrians being the majority of them due to the armed conflict which is devastating the country and the presence of militant groups such as the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
