Three suspected members of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) were killed in a gun battle with Russian Special Forces in Chechnya on Friday. According to the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, the men had arrived in Chechnya after attending training camps in Syria. Kadyrov added that the suspects had entered the country with the intention to attack holidaying Russians. The operation against the suspected IS militants was carried out by the Special Forces of the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service. It marks the first operation against IS inside Russia since the Russian Air Force began their air campaign in Syria. It is estimated that up 2,500 Russians have joined IS in Syria and another 1,700 in Iraq. Moscow has said that the threat of returning Russian IS members to their homeland is part of the reason it is carrying out airstrikes on Syria.
