Italy: Austrian authorities toughen controls at Brenner border crossing

24.05.2016
Austrian authorities beefed up their presence at the Alpine Brenner crossing point with Italy, Tuesday.
At least 80 more security officers and personnel were sent to support those already deployed to patrol the area.
The measure was announced by Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka on Sunday, in an attempt to stop the flow of unregistered refugees coming into Austria from Italy. The main controls were set up at the road and the rail tracks.
In January, Austrian authorities introduced stricter controls at some of their southern border crossings, including the construction of a 250-metre-long (820 feet) barrier on its border with Italy to stem the flow of refugees entering the country. The measure triggered some clashes between police and activists earlier this month.
