German President Joachim Gauck gave a speech about the refugee and migrant crisis at World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Wednesday.
"At the same time I know that even though the civil society achieved many extraordinary things in the previous months, the readiness of solidarity state has its end," Gauck stated. He went on, stating his approval for the scenario of introducing a reduction policy in the receipt of migrants arguing though that "a reduction strategy may be morally and politically even be necessary to preserve the capacity of the state."
"The developments of the last months show that as long as the external borders are not effectively protected, national borders are becoming more important again, and the European freedom of movement is in danger," he added.
Referring to the countries of central-eastern Europe he noted, that: "It is hard to understand though if of all people, those would withdraw their solidarity from those who are being persecuted, when in the past they were themselves being politically persecuted, but benefited from solidarity."
The annual World Economic Forum is taking place in Davos between 20-23 January, gathering high-ranked state leaders, experts and academia from all over the world.
