Ukraine: 2 children injured by RPG round while playing in backyard
18
22.07.2016
Two children were injured, one of them seriously, when an explosive on an RPG-18 round was triggered while the children were playing in their backyard in the village of Dmytrovka, in the Donetsk Region of Ukraine, Thursday.
According to one of the victims, 12-year-old Anna, she and her friend were pulling weeds in her grandmother's garden when her friend's little brother Nikita found the munition. Anna said after asking him "to bring a rake and then hats" the young boy found the grenade. Anna forgot what happened afterwards: "I remember only that I was running."
Anna's grandmother Zinaida Nikolaevna said that Anna was fearful about what would happen asking her "grandma, I don't know what they'll do to me." Zinaida said that she answered: "nobody will send you to jail; what are you talking about? Calm down." Anna's friend was reportedly unhurt and 7-year-old Nikita received arm and leg burns but did not need to be hospitalized.
Anna suffered a severe injury to one of her fingers, as well as open fractures, but traumatologist Alexander Krochenko said the prognosis was relatively optimistic: "now the finger replant is alive. She's getting vascular therapy. We hope it's possible to keep either the whole finger or at least a part of it".
The RPG-18 is a disposable, single shot rocket launcher pre-loaded with a fin-stabilized rocket. It is widely used by military units in eastern Ukraine. Clearing mines and the battle-zone of misfired or still active munitions is considered a major problem by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), monitoring mission to Ukraine.
