Turkish police cleared military vehicles from Taksim Square in Istanbul on Saturday, after attempts to stage a coup shook the city the night before.
People were seen celebrating the failure of the coup, many crowded around The Monument of the Republic, waving Turkish flags.
At least 190 people have been killed and 1,000 injured in the violence, according to General Umit Dundar, who was appointed acting military chief by Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim in the early hours of Saturday.
A faction within the Turkish military announced on Friday evening that it was seizing power "to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights." Airports in Istanbul were closed overnight, military forces blocked traffic on several of Istanbul's bridges and military jets flew low over Turkey's largest city.
In Ankara, the Turkish parliament was attacked along with the presidential palace, with both buildings being attacked from the air, while, also in the city, an F-16 jet also reportedly shot down a military helicopter and gunfire broke out around the Interior Ministry.
