Brazil: Bolsonaro calls for calm, vows to send armed forces to combat fires

SOT, Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilian President (Portuguese): "Good evening, I address all of you to talk about our Amazon that, in the last weeks, has called the attention of Brazil and the world. The Amazon forest is an essential part of our history, of our land and all the things that makes us feel Brazilian. Our richness is unaccountable, in biodiversity as well as in natural resources."
SOT, Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilian President (Portuguese): "To protect the Amazon, operations of inspection, command and control are not enough. It's necessary to give an opportunity to the population (living in the Amazon) to develop together with the rest of the country."
SOT, Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilian President (Portuguese): "We are a government of zero tolerance for crime, and in the environmental area it will be no different. For that reason, we (federal government) have offered help to all the states of the Legal Amazon. For those (states) accepting it, I will authorise the operation of Guarantee of Law and Order, a real environmental GLO [a measure that allow the government to send the armed forces to specific operations]. The use of elements and equipment of the Armed Forces, and other agencies, will allow us not just to fight against the illegal activities but to stop the advance of the fires in the region."

As always, we continue to be open to dialogue-based respect, the truth and awareness of our sovereignty. Other countries were in solidarity with Brazil. They offered resources to combat the fires and were ready to take the Brazilian position to the G7. There are wildfires all around the world, and that can't be an excuse for possible international sanctions. Brazil will keep being, as it has been until now, a country that is a friend of everybody and responsible for the protection of its Amazon forest."

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro addressed his country from the capital of Brasilia on Friday, vowing to take a firm approach to combat the wildfires sweeping through the Amazon rainforest.
"The Amazon forest is an essential part of our history, of our land and all the things that makes us feel Brazilian," Bolsonaro said, adding "we are a government of zero tolerance for crime, and in the environmental area it will be no different."

Bolsonaro's comments come as protests over the handling of the wildfires have emerged not only in many cities throughout Brazil, but around the world.
So far in 2019 nearly 73,000 fires have been recorded by Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, an 84 percent increase as compared to the same period last year.
