Known before as Mostoles Balompie, the Spanish third division football club changed its name to "Flat Earth FC" to support the conspiracy theory that believes the planet Earth is flat, as shown in footage filmed in Madrid on Monday.
The club President, Javi Poves, said the decision to rename the team was a mixture of two passions. "The first is to understand the world in which we live; and the second is the world of football which is what I have dedicated my whole life to," Poves sad.
Touching on the coverage that the international media has made of the "new" team, Poves said he expected such attention. "For being something new but also for being an issue that everyone is talking about, many [media] outlets are trying to cover the great movement that is brewing around the world."
He added that the members of the club are not obliged to believe in the theory.
The Flat Earth FC recently got the promotion to Third Division this season from the Preferential Madrid.
