Residents in the Syrian province of Homs say Islamic State militants have seized the ancient ruins of Palmyra after taking control of a neighboring town from government forces.
ISIS Footage shows a deserted drive through the empty streets in the northeast of Tadmur, on a road that leads to the World Heritage Site of Palmyra.
Activists and Officials Worry about what's in store for the 2,000 year old UNESCO World Heritage Site. ISIS has destroyed and deffaced many works of historic art and architecture in the past. UNESCO Director Irina Bokova issued a plea to the international community to protect the site, which she called the birth of human civilization. She said destroying Palmyra would not only be a war crime but also a loss for humanity.
