One million people, according to organisers, took to the streets of Seoul on Saturday, to demand the resignation of President Park Geun-hye and the calling of a early presidential election.
Thousands of police officers were deployed to monitor the protest and prevent the demonstrators from reaching the presidential palace.
Park is accused of allowing a close friend, Choi Soon-Sil, undue influence over her presidential decisions. On November 3, Soon-Sil was arrested over allegations of fraud and intervening in state affairs. The president gave a speech the next day, saying she was to blame for involving Soon-Sil in government matters.
Pressure on Park to resign has been growing, which would make her the first South Korean leader forced to step down before the end of the five-year term.
