Two German soldiers were seen being led away after suffering apparent exhaustion during a military ceremony in Berlin on Saturday - on the 75th anniversary of a failed assassination attempt against Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Footage shows soldiers suffering from the 30C (86F) heat being helped away from the ceremony by their comrades. Germany reached its highest June temperature on record last month during a Europe-wide heatwave that saw the continent facing uncharacteristically high temperatures. Several German cities are set to face another week of temperatures reaching up to 36C (96.8F).
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who were also in attendance, made speeches expressing the importance of defending democracy from right-wing extremism and fascism.
“Today we still see that legitimate holders of democratic office are abused and called traitors. We still see that human dignity is trampled by hate, marginalisation and division. We still see that our democracy is held in contempt," Kramp-Karrenbauer said.
Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg led an unsuccessful assassination plot against Adolf Hitler on June 20, 1944. He and around 200 other co-conspirators were captured and executed.
