Several hundred retired coal miners rallied at Capitol Hill in Washington DC, Thursday, to demand lifetime retirement benefits as promised by US President Harry Truman in 1946.
Coal miners from the states of Pennsylvania, Illinois and West Virginia converged in the capital to urge the Congress to pass bill SB 1714, also known as the Miners Protection Act of 2015, which would provide additional funds to pay state pensions and benefits.
The International Vice President of the United Mine Workers Union (UMW) James Gibbs said, "They broke their backs for these coal companies and the federal government and we have energised this country for years. Now it's time for the federal government and these coal companies to honour their promise to us and provide our healthcare and pensions.”
The protesters marched under the slogans “Coal Miners Matter”, “Support SB 1714 - it's a matter of life and death” and "Break the promise - miners die".
