Cuban Minister of Public Health Roberto Morales discussed the country's achievement in being the first nation in the world to eliminate mother-to-baby HIV transmissions as he addressed the National Press Club in Washington D.C., Wednesday. Morales' comments follow the Carribbean country's dedication over the past five years in increasing access to antiretrovial drugs. The findings have been formally validated by a committee of independent experts representing the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), who visited the country in March. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) approximately 1.4 million women living with HIV become pregnant and if untreated, there is a 15 to 45 percent chance of transmitting the virus to the child. The risk of transmission is reduced to just one percent when the mother and baby are given antiretrovials.
