Students skirmished with riot police in Panama's capital on Thursday, at protests organised against a rise in electricity tariffs.
Demonstrators built barricades, burnt tires, and threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the police. Officers in riot gear sought to disperse the students and clear the streets.
According to local reports, teachers' associations in Panama called for a 24-hour national strike on July 16, to protest against new tariffs and demand a bigger budget for public education.
"They speak about electricity tariffs, but we all know that the raise will happen in other spheres too," said Luis Delgado, a university professor who took part in Thursday's demonstrations.
