Alberta-- "Canada's Texas" -- Political Milestone From the Election
47
08.05.2015
Alberta is sometimes referred to as the Texas of the north. It's politics have been unabashedly conservative, and like Texas, it's a major center of energy production. But the Alberta oil boom, which was already under mounting pressure from cratering global oil prices, is now at risk of becoming a bust after historic elections on Tuesday ushered into power the province's first left-of-center government in 44 years.
Voters in the western oil-rich province chose a New Democratic Party government in Tuesday's election. Few had predicted such a result just 28 days ago when the election was called by Progressive Conservative leader and Alberta Premier Jim Prentice, a former cabinet minister in Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative federal government.
