The White House in Washington D.C. was lit up in rainbow colours on Friday night after the Supreme Court ruled earlier that day that the US Constitution guarantees same-sex couples nationwide the right to marry. The rainbow is internationally recognised as a symbol of gay pride and LGBT social movements. Following the ruling, LGBT activists held a huge celebratory rally outside the Supreme Court building. People could be seen singing, waving flags and holding placards adorned with slogans such as "not just gay... ecstatic!" Previously, same-sex couples could only marry in the District of Columbia and 36 other states, but now the remaining 14 states will have to revoke their bans. "This decision will end the patchwork system we currently have, it will end the uncertainty hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples face from not knowing whether their marriage, legitimate in the eyes of one state, will remain if they decide to move," US President Barack Obama said in an official statement.
