Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic Leader: "That is simple not true, that is political promise. Border security is a way to effectively honour our responsibility."
Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader: "And the experts say you can do border security without a wall which is wasteful and doesn't solve the problem."
Donald Trump, US President: "It totally solves the problem."
Donald Trump, US President: "You want to know something?"
Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader: "You said it."
Donald Trump, US President: "You want to put that."
Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader: "You said it."
Donald Trump, US President: "I'll take it, you know what I will say, yes, if we don't get what we want, one way or the other, whether it's through you, or through a military, through anything you want to call, I will shut down the government."
Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader: "Okay fair enough, we disagree."
Donald Trump, US President: "And I proud and I will tell you why. I am proud to shut down the government for border security Chuck, because the people of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country. So I will take the mantle, I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it, the last time you shut it down, it didn't work. I will take the mantle of shutting down and I'm going to shut it down for border security."
US President Donald Trump engaged in a fiery exchange with the Democrats' Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker-Designate Nancy Pelosi over funding the government and his proposed border wall, during an Oval Office meeting in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Trump said he would be "proud" to shut down the government over border security. "The people of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country", he said.
Pelosi responded that a wall was not necessary and that Trump was arguing for the sake of a "political promise."
Trump then took a swipe at Schumer over the Democrats' shut down over immigration earlier in the year. "I will take the mantle, I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it, the last time you shut it down, it didn't work. I will take the mantle of shutting down and I'm going to shut it down for border security", he said.
Trump is pushing for $5 billion (€4.4 billion) worth of funding to go towards construction of the planned US-Mexico wall, while Democrats are refusing to dedicate more than $1.3 billion (€1.1 billion) on border security. Since the Republicans need Democrats votes to meet the 60-vote threshold, the Democrats have room to maneuver in negotiations. If an agreement cannot be made between Trump and Congress by the December 21 government funding deadline, a partial government shutdown would be triggered.
