23.03.2016
President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and French Prime Minister Manuel Valls as well as King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium gathered alongside European officials at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, Wednesday, to observe a minute of silence to honour the victims of Tuesday's attacks in Brussels that left 34 dead and more than 180 injured.
Security remains high with a strong military and police presence around the Maelbeek metro station and at Brussel's Zaventem Airport. Evidence gathering and forensic work continues as the terminal building remains visibly destroyed. All access to the airport has been blocked for vehicles and the airport remains closed until further notice.
At least 34 people were killed and more than 180 injured in bomb attacks carried out on Brussels international airport and the Maelbeek metro station. The attacks occurred just four days after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in November's Paris attacks, was captured by Belgian police in Brussels. The so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks.
