Syrian refugee swimmer Yusra Mardini trained in the Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 pool in Berlin, Friday, in preparation for a qualification bid for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 17-year-old, who represented Syria at the short-course World Championships in Turkey in 2012, fled the conflict in her home country along with her sister, Sarah, in August 2015 and now resides in Germany.
"In the water there is no difference if you're a refugee, or Syrian, or German. I think in the water it's just the water, you, and your competitor," said Mardini.
