Human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on hunger strike for 16 years, ended her strike in Imphal, state capital of Manipur, on Tuesday.
By licking some honey from her palm in front of journalists, Sharmila ended her fast and announced that she would run for office in local elections. Later in the day, she is expected to have her first meal after 5757 days.
The 44 year old Sharmila was fed through a nasal tube as she was detained in a hospital under judicial custody, on charges of attempting suicide, which is illegal under Indian law.
The world longest hunger-striker commenced her strike in 2000, after 10 people were allegedly shot by the Indian Army in Manipur. The so-called ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’ has been seen as a symbol of resistance against state violence.
