Thousands of activists took to the streets of Piraeus, near Athens, on Wednesday, to commemorate the sixth anniversary of rapper Pavlos Fyssas's murder.
Fyssas, famous for his anti-fascist songs, was stabbed to death on September 18, 2013, by a member of Greek ultra-right party Golden Dawn.
The killing sparked a judicial crackdown against the party, which is now struggling after failing to enter the Greek parliament in July's elections.
The demonstration began peacefully at the memorial devoted to the tragedy. His mother led marchers through the streets. However, after sunset the situation turned violent close to Golden Dawn's party headquarters.
Protesters through a range of projectiles and set off fireworks. Police responded with tears in an effort to disperse the crowd.
