Around 200 migrants gathered at the border-crossing of Ventimiglia on the Italian-French border on Friday, with some so exhausted they lay on the grass and floor. French and Italian police continue to secure the border due to authorities in the former country barring the migrants' entrance. Some of the migrants have begun protesting in the area, holding banners and placards critical of French authorities. Addressing the cameras, one of the migrants said the group wants to cross into France before heading to northern Europe to reunite with friends and relatives. Mostly from Eritrea and Somalia, the Red Cross and other organisations have intervened, providing the migrants with food, water and other life essentials. Over 100,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean and landed on European shores in 2015 alone, with southern Europe seeing the majority of arrivals. Italy is currently host to an estimated 54,000 new arrivals, a number rivalled only by the 48,000 migrants that have arrived in Greece this year. Friday's events in Ventimiglia come as Rome's Tiburtina and Milan's central stations were overrun earlier in the week by hundreds of migrants attempting to reach northern Europe after EU border controls were implemented.
