Police escorted Right Sector protesters away from a commemoration ceremony at Kulykove Pole in Odessa on Monday, after the group allegedly tried to disrupt the ceremony marking two years since the deadly Odessa Trades Union House fire.
Members of the far-right organisation, including its Odessa branch leader Sergey Sternenko, arrived at the ceremony dressed in military uniforms and wearing bullet-proof vests, in what was seen as a provocation by the victims' relatives and other mourners gathered at the site.
Eventually, one of the participants of the rally asked the Right Sector members to withdraw, and when they refused a scuffle broke out. Police were forced to intervene and to escort the members of Right Sector away from the rally. Reportedly, the police arrested more than a dozen of people who were involved in the brawl.
Forty-eight people died, with over 200 injured, in a series of events that led to an large blaze ripping through the Trade Unions building in Odessa on May 2. After clashes erupted between anti-Maidan and pro-Maidan protesters, the latter group reportedly set fire to the Trade Unions House where anti-Maidan demonstrators had found refuge.
Despite international concerns and calls to investigate the tragedy, the perpetrators of the 2014 Odessa massacre have yet to be caught or prosecuted.
