Dozens rallied in Tel Aviv on Saturday to demand the release of Israeli-American Naama Issachar, who was sentenced to seven and a half years imprisonment in Russia on charges of drug smuggling.
Footage shows protesters holding signs demanding the release of Issachar, rally-goers could also be heard chanting "Free Naama."
"Our request from Israel is to do whatever is possible. We ask Russia to release her. Seven and a half years in prison is a very hard punishment, it is unreasonable and disproportionate. We ask to distance her from political decisions," Gal Shalom Cohen a relative of Issachar said at the protest.
Twenty-six-year-old Issachar was detained in April last year after 9.5 grams of cannabis was found in her possession as she was taking a connecting flight in Moscow. On October 11 she was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.
Protesters see her imprisonment as a political move connected to Israel's detention of Russian born Aleksey Burkov, who was arrested in 2015 on suspected hacking and embezzlement charges.
Burkov is currently awaiting extradition to the US for his suspected crimes and Moscow has reportedly requested the extradition of Burkov to Russia in exchange for the release of Issachar.
