UK Prime Minister Theresa May said delivering on the 2016 Brexit referendum is 'what matters', when speaking to the press upon her arrival for the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday.
"I sincerely hope we can do that with a deal but what matter is that we deliver Brexit, the decision of the British people," May said.
She also noted that a short extension, until June 30, could help the UK leave with a deal in place.
"A request of a short extension would give parliament the time to make a final choice that delivers on the result of the referendum," she said.
European leaders were arriving at the European Council for the first day of the European Council summit.
In the two-day summit, they are set to discuss the latest developments following UK MPs' decision to seek an extension to Article 50, the strengthening the European economic base, climate change, the upcoming summit with China and ways to tackle disinformation.
