Canada: Students demand York University stop investing in weapons trade

Students protested against York University's investments in weapon manufacturing companies in Toronto, Thursday.
The protest was organised by several student groups including Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA), York Federation of Students (YFS) as well as YorkU Alumni for Social Justice. "The university should find ways to contribute to efforts towards peace and avoid any involvement with anything that has to do with military and war," students said.
The rally was confronted by a small group of the far-right Jewish Defense League (JDL) supporters.
In 2013, the official club status of the SAIA was revoked by the York University administration for "disturbing academic activities on campus." Moreover, the Toronto university also prohibited SAIA activist and former York student Hammam Farah from entering the campus. The University's decision was in response to a SAIA protest that took place on March 27, 2013 to celebrate the passing of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions resolutions at the student unions.
