African Heads of State and former Presidents bid farewell to late Robert Mugabe during a state ceremony held at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Saturday, though most of the stadium seats were left empty.
A military parade took place to tribute to Mugabe and various African officials held speeches about Mugabe’s achievements in life for the nation and continent. Current South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was booed by the crowd during his speech.
Songs accompanied the ceremony as former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) Brahim Gahli, current Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, SA President Ramaphosa and other foreign dignitaries walked past the casket to pay their tributes.
Robert Mugabe was a leading figure of the independence movement that saw his country breaking away from the British rule in 1980. He remained in power until 2017 when he was toppled by his own army.
Mugabe died in a Singapore hospital at age 95 on September 6.
