Almost 20 years after Joseph Brodsky’s death, a museum dedicated to the Nobel Prize-winning Russian poet will open in his native St. Petersburg with a sneak preview of the exhibition kicking off on Friday. The museum is located in the flat where he lived with his parents and will officially be opened on Monday, which is the 75th anniversary of Brodsky’s birth. The museum has already collected 4,500 thousand showpieces, some of them taken from the poet’s American apartment. Brodsky was a protege of the poet Anna Akhmatova and had a similarly troubled relationship with Soviet authorities. He was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1972 and took up permanent residence in the U.S. where he became poet laureate. He never again returned to Russia.
