Thousands of gaming fans gathered in Paris' Luxembourg Garden, on Thursday to play Pokemon Go, the new mobile app that is the latest addition to the Pokemon franchise.
The game uses the GPS on smartphones to track players and have Pokemon appear as users of the app go about their day to day lives. The game tries to replicate real world environments by tracking landmarks and terrains; it has been programmed so that bug and grass Pokemon will appear in parks, while water types will pop up near lakes and rivers.
One fan, Fred, who dressed up as a Pikachu, expressed his excitement about the gathering, "This is an incredible event today, this is a meeting through Pokemon. I mean, this is just Japanese monsters that bring hundreds of people together at the Luxembourg garden. Some people decided to create an event here just for fun, and 6000 people wanted to go."
