Spain: Thousands of students go on strike against new education law

26.10.2016
Thousands of students took to the streets of Madrid, on Wednesday, during a strike to protest against the new Organic Law to Improve Education Quality (LOMCE) of the Popular Party.
Students marched while chanting slogans and holding banners against the Education Ministry and the government as a whole. Some of the students also held Spanish Republican flags.
Similar demonstrations were staged over 70 cities all across the country. More than 90 percent of the students have followed the strike according to the students union.
The government’s massive cuts on public education budget and the new education law are feared to make education accessible only to those who can afford to pay for it. The "revalida," a series of exams to be taken at the end of the secondary and post-secondary education, could see hundreds of thousands of youths between 14 and 16 years old prematurely expelled from studies, as passing these exams will be essential in order to continue their studies.
