20.09.2016
The headquarters of the main opposition Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party was set on ablaze in Kinshasa on Tuesday morning.
Two bodies were reportedly found at the site of the burnt building. The arson happened after a night of political unrest and violent clashes between police and protesters, after current president Joseph Kabila’s decision to further delay elections triggered people to take to the streets. More than 50 people have been reported dead and several injured after to two days of unrest.
Opponents of Kabila assert that the president is trying to maintain power through undemocratic means, while his supporters say that financial and logistical constraints have made it so far impossible to hold complete elections.
