U.S. May Raise Arab States to 'Major' Ally Status
27
15.05.2015
The White House is open to the possibility of declaring all of the Arab states attending a Camp David summit “major non-NATO allies,” a designation that makes it easier for the United States to provide financial and military aid.The designation stops short of being a mutual defense pact, but President Barack Obama also is expected to publicly assure the Arab countries that the U.S. will help them defend themselves against external threats.
It’s unclear whether such statements of support or other announcements about future cooperation will fully convince Arab leaders that the U.S. remains a steadfast ally. Obama called the Camp David meeting with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council to ease Arab fears over the nuclear talks with Iran.
