05.10.2016
At least two people died when Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti Tuesday morning. Winds of up to 145 mph (233 kph) tore into trees and buildings, while torrential rains flooded the streets.
Several people were injured and homes were destroyed when the category 4 storm pounded the island. The storm also killed at least four people on the neighbouring island, Dominican Republic, as well as one person in Colombia and another in St. Vincent.
At this point it is still too early to tell just how much damage the hurricane has really caused, Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, director of Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency said. An official request has been issued to the United Nations (UN) to assist Haitian emergency services. Some 55,000 people are still living in temporary shelters, as the country has not quite recovered from the earthquake in 2010.
