26.07.2016
The president of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov stated that the list of Russian athletes scheduled to compete at the Rio Olympic Games would be confirmed after a consultation with all the international sports federations. He made the comments at a press conference at the Central Sports Army Club, in Moscow, Tuesday.
Zhukov stressed that the list "is verified now and each of our sports federations is cooperating with the relevant international federation." He referred to the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation, Mikhail Mamiashvili, who, Zhukov said, "is doing this work with the wrestling team."
The ROC head remarked that "there are individual athletes who do not meet the criteria of the International Olympic Committee, particularly those penalised for doping violations [in the past]." He added that athletes who "have not been tested abroad" might also not meet the criteria of the International Olympic Committee.
On Sunday the IOC announced that there will be no blanket ban on Russian athletes who wish to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, the Russian athletes will have to meet strict criteria laid down by the IOC on an individual case by case basis; including the stipulation that any Russian athlete who has already been banned for doping will not be eligible to compete in the Rio Olympics.
