Kraig Biocraft Labs exhibited their new method of creating hyper strong, elastic spider silk by genetically altering regular silk worms from their laboratories in South Bend, Indiana, on Friday, a technique that has caught the group a potential contract from the US army.
John Rice, the COO of Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, explained that using silkworms is one of the fastest ways to create silk products, splicing the genetic makeup in the silkworms to produce particularly strong material, dubbed 'Dragon Silk'.
The US Army has taken interest in the highly elastic super-strength spider silk produced by the worms, providing the company with a contract to explore the use of the silk in military and ballistic applications. The company hopes that the silk's elasticity and strength will allow the production of more effective bullet proof vests.
