Australia: Aussies take on Monsanto and GMOs on worldwide day of action

23.05.2015
Protesters marched through Sydney on Saturday as part of the annual worldwide 'March Against Monsanto.' Demonstrators held placards with slogans such as 'Sick of lies' and 'GMO is killing our children slowly,' while chanting "Monsanto, how rude, they are poisoning our food." The organisers of the march say Monsanto's products threaten people's health, fertility and longevity. The company's glyphosate-containing Roundup herbicide has been determined a 'probable carcinogen' within the food supply by the World Health Organization (WHO). Activists also say tests on the effects of cross-pollination of genetically-modified crops with other species are inadequate. They also decry a state of affairs which says non-GM farmers are obliged to prevent even inadvertent contamination by Monsanto's GM seeds or run the risk of being sued for growing crops that contain traces of the firm's patented biotechnology products. March Against Monsanto 2015 spans six continents, 48 countries, and 421 cities. Organisers expect attendance figures this year to shatter previous records.
