Turkey: Thousands celebrate Newroz in Diyarbakir despite terror fears

21.03.2016
Tens of thousands gathered in Diyarbakir on Monday, to celebrate the Kurdish new year, also known as Newroz. Among the speakers was co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtas.
Diyarbakir, highly populated by Kurds and a HDP stronghold, has beefed up security amid fears of new terrorist acts like last year’s suicide attacks on HDP events in Diyabakir and Ankara in August and October, killing more than 100 people in total. On top of that, clashes between pro-Kurdish protesters and Turkish security forces are expected, as a result of Turkey‘s offensive against the Kurdistan Workers‘ Party (PKK) and affiliates.
Hundreds of thousands are expected to attend the festivities this year, while millions were counted in recent years.
