Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that "combat capabilities" were doubled in southern Russia because of terrorism threats, the strengthening of NATO military presence and the situation in Ukraine, during a meeting in Moscow, Wednesday, adding that the "military-political situation in the south-western strategic direction became more sensitive."
Shoigu termed it "an adequate response" to the current situation in the world, adding that Russia had formed "four divisions, nine brigades and twenty-two regiments" as well as "two missile brigades, equipped with Iskander-M complexes." Among the new military equipment sent to region, Shoigu named "new combat aircraft and S-300V4, S-400 and Buk-M2 anti-aircraft missile systems and Pantsir-S1 gun complexes."
NATO declared that it would establish an increased presence in eastern European member states after Russia's reunification with Crimea. Military exercises on land, air and sea have since been ramped-up, involving more troops and greater integration between various militaries.
