09.02.2016
German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara, Monday.
Merkel condemned Russian airstrikes in Syria claiming that she was "not only appalled but horrified by the human sorrow of tens of thousands of people caused by airstrikes, predominantly from the Russian side."
Merkel mentioned UN Security Council Resolution 2054, which demands the end of "any attacks against civilians" in Syria. The Security Council also demanded "an immediate access to humanitarian aid." The German Chancellor also vowed that "Turkey and Germany will become active in New York to demand a compliance to this resolution."
The German leader is in Turkey to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis. Both leaders talked about the respective roles their countries are playing to alleviate the crisis, as well as discussing Germany's commitment to provide financial support to Turkey. The meeting comes as tens of thousands of refugees from Syria continue to arrive at the Turkish border.
