Followers of Prominent Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr protested outside the Turkish embassy in Baghdad, Monday, against Turkey's military involvement inside Iraq, including the occupation of a military base close to Mosul.
Protesters waving Iraqi flags decried Turkey's military involvement in the Kurdish-majority north of the country, slamming the Turkish military deployment at a military base in Bashiqa, close to Mosul, which Turkey argues is for training Kurdish Pashmerga and Arab fighters to battle against so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi has previously called for Turkish forces to withdraw their troops from Bashiqa, however Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday, that Turkish forces will remain in the camp, stating later that they will take part in the offensive to recapture Mosul.
