President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz awarded the Sakharov Prize two Yazidi women, Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar, at the European Parliament plenary, in Strasbourg, Thursday.
"They had to witness the cruelty of the so-called Islamic State. Both had to witness their closest family members being killed right in front of their eyes, and both of them were used as sex slaves and were humiliated," said Schultz.
Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar were among captive young Yazidi girls, who had survived being captured by Islamic State militants. In the summer of 2014, they were abducted from the village of Kocho in northwest Iraq and had witnessed the mass killing of Yazidis.
Nadia Murad Basee was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and was officially appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking. She also was awarded the Vaclav Havel human rights prize.
The award ceremony will take place on December 14 in Strasbourg.
