Dozens of activists crashed the British Museum's 'Days of the Dead' festival in London on Friday, to protest the event which is sponsored by the Mexican government and oil giant BP. Keeping in tune with the event's theme, the activists wore special Dia de Los Muertos Calavera make-up and rallied outside the museum's entrance. The demonstrators denounced the Mexican government's treatment of the case of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, and BP, who are set to pay out $20.8 billion (19 billion euros) in damages following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill five years ago. Protesters in costumes held banners and chanted "BP go home." According to one of the activists, "behind the scenes BP and the Mexican government are doing dirty deals in order to give BP access to more of Mexico's oil and gas." She went on to say that "Mexican government is on this kind of great PR mission to show what a great culture it is around the world while its human rights situation is absolutely terrible." The activists also rallied in support of group of the students in Ayotzinapa who disappeared last year. People held students' portraits as well as banners reading "In Mexico, people disappear while big oil prospers" and "43 Mexican students disappeared by the state". On September 27 thousands of protesters gathered in Mexico City for a "March of National Indignation" for the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of the Ayotzinapa students. A recent report by the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IAHCR) contradicts the Mexican government's version of events in Ayotzinapa, leading many to accuse authorities of a potential cover-up operation.
