A Halal store in the Paris commune of Colombes has been told is must stock alcohol and pork or face being shut down. The residential authority from which the Good Price store rents its premises, has said members of the local community are not being adequately served by the business.
The housing authority says the store must, according to its lease agreement, operate as a “general food store” and serve the local community as a whole.
Store owner Soulemane Yalcin stressed that it would not be commerically viable for his store to stock alcohol. "Colombes Habitat Public [the city administration overseeing the matter] wants me to add an alcohol shelf but it is commercially not profitable for me," he said. "So I don’t see the point, in my commercial interest, of selling a product from which I won’t earn money and that will bring me security, theft or vandalism problems," he added.
