16.04.2015
Thousands of fast-food workers marched through downtown New York, Wednesday, as protesters throughout the country called for a raise to a minimum $15-an-hour (€14.05) wage in the food industry. Participants in the march, organised by the Service Employees International Union, carried effigies of Ronald McDonald and banners reading “Fight for $15 and a union”. Hundreds of people settled outside a local McDonald’s restaurant near Times Square at rush hour, playing drums and singing outside. With similar protests happening simultaneously in 230 cities across the United States, the day’s demonstrations were the largest protest by low-wage workers in US history. The current US federal minimum wage is $7.25 (€6.77) an hour which protesters in lower-income brackets state is too low to survive on.
