UK: Jeremy Corbyn stands with Greece against austerity

07.07.2015
Labour leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn addressed a crowd of hundreds during a rally in solidarity with the people of Greece, at the Trade Union Congress building in London, Monday. Corbyn passionately attacked senior figures within the European Union for their “systematic attempt at denigration and abuse of the government of Greece.” He also expressed his admiration for the people of Greece , who were “not going to be defeated“ and decisively voted ‘no’, during Sunday’s bailout referendum. Corbyn, who is a Member of Parliament in North London, has been gathering support in his attempt to become leader of the Labour party, after their comprehensive defeat earlier this year in the UK general election. The MP has been garnering the support of various trade unions in his candidacy bid, many of which express sympathy with his anti-austerity message. Corbyn linked the rejecting of austerity measures by the Greek people to his own anti-austerity campaigning; criticising the Conservative Governments proposed £12 billion (€16.5 billion, $18.8 billion) in unspecified welfare cuts. The leadership hopeful declared he wanted to build “a social movement across Europe that challenges the agenda that the Bankers run Europe and not the people.” In the Greek referendum on Sunday, 61.3 percent of registered voters opted for 'No' on the bailout terms proposed by foreign creditors compared to the 38.7 percent who voted 'Yes'.
