Crew on the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton spent over four hours offloading 66,000 pounds (28,937 kg) of cocaine, with a street-value of over $1 billion (€907 million), in San Diego on Tuesday. US Coast Guard Commandant, Paul Zukunft, who greeted the ship on its return to port, told the crew that the drug smugglers were "vulnerable" because they were on the Coast Guard's "home-turf." The offloading of cocaine is one of the largest in US history. The Cutter Stratton intercepted or disrupted 23 drug smuggling attempts during its two months at sea. The included the raiding of two submarines, one of which was carrying bales of cocaine worth more than $181 million (€164 million) wholesale. For their efforts the crew of the Stratton were awarded with the Director's Award for Sustained Distinguished Service from the Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy.
